Ingestion of candy is the most common health hazard for pets on and around the Halloween weekend. All forms of chocolate, candy containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, and discarded wrappers, pose a significant risk to your pet’s health if consumed. Symptoms of these toxins can include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, accelerated breathing or heart rate and even seizures.
Halloween dangers are not exclusive to toxic candy, Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists doctors recommend that owners keep their pets in a safe, confined area away from trick-or-treaters. Increased neighborhood traffic and an influx of approaching strangers in costume can be stressful for pets on Halloween night. Constantly opening and closing a front door for trick-or-treaters increases the likelihood of a family pet getting outside. Ensure your pets are always wearing proper identification and have your pet microchipped. This dramatically increases the chances they will be returned if lost.
Halloween decorations can also be deadly for curious pets. Jack-o-lanterns, candles and electric cords should all be kept in areas away from household pets for their safety and yours.
“If you believe that your pet has consumed candy of any kind, immediately contact your family vet or 24-hour animal hospital,” Said Dr. Ira Zaslow, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care and medical director of Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists.
