Local veterinary hospital feeds pets, people this holiday season

IMG_0679FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists kicked off the holiday season by donating more than 3,250 pounds of turkey to the Pantry of Broward, and has coordinated for more than 500 pounds of dog food to be donated to a local pet rescue group.

In addition to the 325 turkeys being donated by Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists, the Fort Lauderdale-based specialty and emergency animal hospital also organized a community food drive. The focus of the food drive, which ended Monday, was collecting canned food and other non-perishable items to also be donated to the Pantry of Broward.

The Pantry of Broward is a charitable organization that provides 55 pound boxes of food to more than 400 families in Broward County each month.

Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists has also teamed up with the pet food manufacturer Royal Canin to help feed less fortunate pets during the holiday season. Royal Canin has donated approximately 550 pounds of dog food, which will be donated to the 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida rescues abandoned pets across South Florida, provides them with urgent care and eventually places them in a new home. To date the group has rescued more than 3,220 pets from neglect and IMG_0680abuse.

“Broward County is our home and has a special place in our hearts. We’re thankful for the opportunity to give back to organizations, which help serve our community,” said Dr. Ira Zaslow, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care and medical director of Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists. “Charities are often stretched for resources during the holiday season and we want to ensure that they have the supplies they need.”
