FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Doctors from Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists, a specialty and emergency hospital for pets in Fort Lauderdale, are treating a 9-month-old puppy that was rescued from a fire and transported by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to LVS Monday morning.

At approximately 9 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the 1800 block of Southwest 22nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. Before firefighters arrived, neighbors were able to rescue a 9-month-old puppy named Sweet Pea, according to Jason Hall, Sweet Pea’s owner. Unfortunately, Hall’s two other dogs died at the scene.SweetPea 5

Sweet Pea was then transported to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists by firefighters, and veterinarians have been treating her injuries since. She is currently in the intensive care unit at LVS where she is being treated for second degree burns to 20-30 percent of her body. She was also treated for smoke inhalation. Doctors say her prognosis is serious. Critical care specialists have administered IV fluids, oxygen and medication for pain management. She will also need to undergo daily wound management and bandage changes.

“We’re very thankful for the actions of the good Samaritans and the firefighters, as we were able to give Sweet Pea a good chance at survival,” said Dr. Lynel Tocci, a board-certified emergency and critical care specialist at LVS. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they cope with the loss of their other two other dogs and the devastation of the fire.”

SweetPea 2According to Tocci, the next several days will be telling as to how Sweet Pea will respond to treatment.
