South Fla. veterinarians issue warning after pet treats recalled

pet treat recallFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Doctors from Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists are warning South Florida residents to make sure they aren’t giving their pets treats that were recalled by a pet product manufacturer earlier this week.

On Monday, Natural Dog Company, Inc. issued a recall for their 12oz bags of 12″ Tremenda Sticks pet chews due to a potential presence of salmonella. The recall affects California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and Washington.

The treats were recalled after an inspection by the Colorado Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of salmonella when a sample was taken from the product.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the recalled product comes in a 12oz bag without a lot number or expiration date with UPC number: 851265004957. Products with new packaging, which include both a lot number and expiration date, but the same UPC, are not affected by this recall.

Symptoms of salmonella in pets include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.

“If you notice your pet experiencing any of these symptoms, get them to the nearest veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Dr. Ira Zaslow, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care and founder of LVS.

Besides posing a risk to pets, people may be at risk too, due to handling the treats. Veterinarians suggest for people to always wash their hands after handling pet treats and pet food.

Production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem, an FDA press release stated.

According to the release, no illnesses have been reported so far.
